WORLD TOURISM DAY

Last week we celebrated WORLD TOURISM DAY, an international event held every year on September 27th. Since 1979, when the UN General Assembly decided to dedicate a day to tourism, many themes have been explored.
In 2024, the focus was on “Tourism and Peace”, to highlight the human values behind tourism and its vital role as a bridge for peace, understanding, and reconciliation among nations and cultures.

For 2025, the theme will be “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation”, recognizing tourism’s vast reach across infrastructure, energy, transport, healthcare, and job creation — making it essential to achieving the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

These three words — TOURISM, TRANSFORMATION, and SUSTAINABILITY — define the very essence of Hotel BonSol: to evolve without losing authenticity, to remain both economically and ecologically sustainable.
As early as the 1960s, Don Antonio Xamena understood the global economic potential of tourism, but also foresaw the risks of mass tourism without responsible, cross-sector collaboration.

It’s no coincidence that in 2025 we return to the topic of tourism and sustainability. Yet, back in the sixties, only visionary entrepreneurs were already working on alternative, eco-friendly energy methods.

It’s regrettable that such an important day still doesn’t receive the media resonance it deserves. The echo of international press remains faint, even though tourism drives the economy of many countries (in Spain, it represents 13% of GDP) and owes much to courageous entrepreneurs who devoted their lives to sustainable development.

We hope that WORLD TOURISM DAY will one day become a key global political event for advancing sustainability goals — and a true celebration of tourism’s economic, social, and cultural value. After all, tourism, by its very nature, is the foundation of integration among cultures.
